Dr Oliver Watts
Oliver is a speech technologist with a particular focus on applications related to health and assistive technology, such as speech synthesis and brain-computer interfaces for communication aid users, voice banking and health monitoring from speech. He is contributing speech and machine learning expertise in work with the Anne Rowling Clinic, as well as doctoral supervision.
Oliver received his PhD degree with the doctoral thesis "Unsupervised Learning for Text-to-Speech Synthesis" from the University of Edinburgh in 2012. He led the design and creation of the speech synthesis technology at the core of SpeakUnique - a University of Edinburgh spin-out company which launched in 2020 to deliver personalised communication solutions for people otherwise unable to speak.
