Parkinson's and movement disorders clinic

Our team runs weekly Parkinson's (PD) and movement disorders clinic.

The clinic receives referrals from primary and secondary care, predominantly from within the NHS Lothian catchment area.

Parkinsonism (mainly idiopathic Parkinson's, PD) is the most common movement disorder, but other forms of movement disorder including ataxia, tremor, tics, dystonia and functional movement disorder are also seen in this clinic.

On the first appointment you will meet with one of the neurologists who will review the clinical symptoms and history and carry out a detailed physical examination. They will discuss the diagnosis, help decide what your needs are, and arrange any further tests required. We very much encourage you to bring your partner and/or close family/carer to the consultation, and recommend that you think in advance about any questions you might like to ask, possibly noting these down on a note-pad to bring with you.

If you wear reading glasses then it would be a good idea to bring these with you to your appointment and if you are on any regular medications then bringing along a list of these is also helpful.

Both new and review patients are seen and the clinic liaises closely with PD specialist nurses and other PD experts in Lothian.
